Betting is great fun and fantastic entertainment, but as we know, for some, it can become excessive or problematic. These bettors require a little additional guidance, more ways to set limits, and access to dedicated resources in order to stay safe. As the industry grows with more and more states adopting legalized betting, the need for the industry’s leaders to invest in the safety of their customers grows ever more important.
Today we take a look at how some of the world’s leading gambling organizations—and BetMGM's parent companies, GVC Holdings and MGM Resorts International—are committing to safer play with new tools, increased funding for research, and greater transparency as this exciting pastime grows in popularity.
GVC’s Changing for the Bettor
One of the world’s largest sports betting and gaming groups, GVC has a long history of ethical practices to help encourage responsible gaming. The organization is committed to leading the charge, and their reputation for fairness and integrity speaks for itself. In 2018, GVC joined the National Council on Problem Gambling’s (NCPG’s) President’s Circle, a visionary group of industry leaders that have made a multi-year commitment to combat problem gambling and promote responsible national standards.
Early in 2019, the company rededicated itself to fostering responsible gaming with a sweeping initiative, “Changing for the Bettor.” This new global safer gambling strategy is focused around seven comprehensive principles: understand the problem and its solutions, educate key stakeholders, promote responsible attitudes, empower customers, fund treatment, champion responsible product design, and drive change within the business. Also in 2019, GVC launched the United States Foundation, which, among many other projects, supports NCPG’s work on behalf of military personnel and veterans affected by gambling problems.
MGM Resorts’ GameSense
Launched in 2017, MGM’s responsible gaming initiative, GameSense, recently surpassed 1 million customer interactions at its US properties. The program focuses on having positive, transparent, and proactive conversations about how to gamble safely. Developed and licensed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, this industry-leading program comes alive through personal interactions between guests and trained staff based at each MGM property. Guests can also use interactive GameSense touchscreens, get educational materials, and tap into additional online resources to help ensure safe and responsible gambling. The program has been recognized by the National Council on Problem Gambling.
BetMGM: A Safe Bet
Launched in September 2019 in New Jersey by BetMGM, a joint venture between GVC Holdings and MGM Resorts, BetMGM is a new online sports betting platform filled with powerful new tools that encourage more responsible gambling. Built around the principles of “real fairness, real security, and real prevention,” the site offers an assortment of useful resources to help keep users safe.
In addition to providing information on how to recognize problem gambling and providing links to outreach organizations, the site features powerful functionality to help bettors remain in control of how they play, including the options to limit deposits and wagers and enable time limits on time spent gaming, as well as quickly decrease any limits they have previously set. (While the site honors requests for limit increases, there’s an intentional delay on enacting them.) In addition, should players need a cooling-off period from gaming, they can call a “timeout” or even exclude themselves from play for a set period. The new app is slated to expand to additional states shortly.
